Link reclamation is the process of finding backlinks your site previously had, diagnosing why they were lost or misdirected, and recovering the useful ones. You are not looking for websites that have never linked to you. You are repairing a citation, page, or redirect path that once existed.
A practical link reclamation workflow has five steps:
- Export links that recently became lost.
- Confirm the loss on the live web.
- Classify what changed.
- Fix problems you control before contacting anyone.
- Request an edit only when it clearly helps the publisher's readers.

What counts as a lost backlink?
A backlink may appear lost for several different reasons:
- The author removed the link but kept the surrounding passage.
- The publisher deleted the page containing the link.
- The publisher redirected its page to another URL where the citation is absent.
- Your linked page now returns a 404 or 410.
- Your linked page redirects to a generic or irrelevant destination.
- A migration changed your canonical URL without preserving a direct path.
- The link still exists, but a crawler temporarily failed to observe it.
- The referring page is still live but is no longer indexable.
These cases do not deserve the same response. Some can be fixed on your site. Some require an editorial update. Some are not recoverable at all.
Treat backlink-tool alerts as leads, not proof. Link indexes recrawl pages on their own schedules. A report may lag behind a restoration, miss a client-rendered link, or label a redirect as lost even when visitors still reach an equivalent page.
Link reclamation is not unlinked mention claiming
The distinction is simple:
- Link reclamation: The page linked to you before, and that link or its useful destination was later lost.
- Unlinked mention claiming: The page mentions you, but you have no evidence it ever linked to your site.
The evidence and outreach are different. For reclamation, you can identify the previous linked page and investigate the change. For an unlinked mention, you are asking the editor to add a new citation.
Do not call every unlinked company name a “lost link.” It makes the request harder to trust and mixes two separate workflows.
Build a link-loss inventory
Export recently lost backlinks from your backlink monitoring tool. Use a review window long enough to catch meaningful changes without creating an unmanageable backlog. A monthly review is a reasonable starting cadence for most small sites.
Keep one row per referring URL and destination URL pair. Useful fields include:

Deduplicate exact referring and destination pairs. Keep separate rows when one article linked to several of your pages because each destination may require a different fix.
Start with links lost after a known event such as a redesign, domain migration, CMS change, content consolidation, or product retirement. A concentrated loss window often exposes a technical pattern you can repair in bulk.
Verify every reported loss live
Open the referring URL and the previous destination. Record the final response after redirects, not only the first status.
Check the referring page
Confirm whether it:
- Returns 200 and still contains the relevant passage
- Returns 200 but no longer contains the passage
- Redirects to an equivalent article
- Redirects to a homepage or unrelated page
- Returns 404 or 410
- Returns a temporary server error
- Blocks automated requests but loads for normal visitors
- Requires authentication or has moved behind a paywall
Search the source for the old anchor text, your brand, the linked page title, and your domain. Inspect image links, footnotes, reference lists, and expandable sections. A visible brand name may be unlinked while a nearby image still points to your site.
Check your destination
Confirm whether the old destination:
- Loads as the intended canonical page
- Permanently redirects once to a close equivalent
- Passes through a redirect chain
- Redirects to an irrelevant category or homepage
- Returns 404, 410, or 5xx
- Is blocked by robots directives or authentication
- Declares a different canonical URL
- Has been replaced by a materially different page
Do not send outreach until your own destination works. Asking an editor to restore a link to a broken or misleading page wastes the strongest part of the opportunity.
Classify the loss before choosing an action
Use a small set of operational categories.
1. Your destination is broken or moved
This is usually the first category to fix because you control it.
Restore the old page when it was removed accidentally and still serves the same need. If the content has a genuine replacement, add a direct permanent redirect from the old URL to that close equivalent.
Google documents permanent server-side redirects such as 301 and 308 as strong signals that the redirect target should be canonical. Its redirect guidance also recommends redirecting to the new location rather than an irrelevant destination.
Avoid these shortcuts:
- Sending every retired URL to the homepage
- Redirecting a deleted guide to an unrelated product page
- Creating several hops between the old and current URL
- Redirecting to a filtered or temporary campaign URL
- Restoring thin placeholder text solely to return a 200 status
After the repair, test the old URL, final destination, canonical tag, internal links, and sitemap entry. If the referring page still links to the old URL, a clean redirect may solve the user journey without editorial outreach. You can still request a direct URL update for an important citation, but it is no longer urgent.
2. The publisher removed only your link
Read the current paragraph before contacting the editor. The page may have changed scope, replaced your source with a better one, removed all external links, or corrected a claim.
A request is reasonable when:
- The surrounding statement still relies on your original data or documentation.
- The anchor text remains but is no longer clickable.
- A CMS migration appears to have stripped links broadly.
- The replacement link is broken or points to the wrong source.
- Your page remains the best primary destination for the specific statement.
Close the case when the citation is no longer relevant, your page has become weaker than the replacement, or the publication has a clear policy against the link.
3. The publisher deleted or redirected its page
If the referring page is gone, there may be nobody to contact and nothing to restore. Check whether the publisher consolidated it into a live equivalent.
When the destination article survives but the citation was dropped during consolidation, a concise correction request may help. When the old article was intentionally retired and no equivalent exists, mark the link as permanently lost.
Do not ask the publisher to republish an obsolete article merely to recreate your backlink.
4. The referring page is temporarily unavailable
A timeout, bot block, or 5xx response is not enough evidence for outreach. Recheck from a browser and again later. Record the date and avoid treating a short outage as a permanent link loss.
5. The link exists but the page is not indexable
The publisher may intentionally noindex a private, duplicate, thin, or archived page. That is its editorial and technical decision.
Do not pressure an editor to make a page indexable for your benefit. If the page still sends useful referral traffic, keep it in your records. If it has no audience or discoverability, classify it separately from a physically removed link.
Prioritize cases that still help readers
Not every lost backlink deserves recovery. Score each verified case from 0 to 2 on five factors:
- Source relevance: Does the referring page serve an audience related to the destination?
- Citation fit: Does your page directly support the surrounding statement?
- Destination quality: Is your page current, useful, accessible, and stable?
- Editorial recoverability: Is there a live page and responsible contact who can make the edit?
- Business relevance: Does the destination support a meaningful product, resource, or user journey?
Review high-scoring cases first. Close cases involving scraper pages, autogenerated profiles, malware risks, paid-link sellers, irrelevant directories, or pages with no legitimate editorial context.
Authority metrics can help order otherwise similar opportunities, but they cannot establish relevance or prove that an edit is appropriate.
Fix patterns, not just individual URLs
A reclamation report often reveals a sitewide problem.
Look for clusters such as:
- Many lost links pointing to one retired URL pattern
- HTTP URLs failing to reach their HTTPS equivalents
- Redirect chains introduced during repeated migrations
- Uppercase and lowercase paths resolving inconsistently
- Trailing-slash variants that no longer resolve
- Assets moved from an old CDN without redirects
- International or language URLs consolidated incorrectly
- Canonicals pointing away from valid linked pages
Repair the reusable routing, migration, or publishing layer when possible. Hand-adding one redirect at a time leaves the cause in place.
Then update your own internal links to point directly to the canonical destination. Users and crawlers should not rely on redirects when you control the linking page.
Write a precise reclamation request
Contact the author or editor only after verifying the old link, current context, and working destination.
A useful message contains:
- The exact live article URL
- The section or sentence involved
- What changed
- The current source URL
- Why the correction helps the reader
For example:
Subject: Updated source in your retention benchmarks guide
Hi Maya,
Your section on annual-plan retention previously linked “Northstar Benchmark Report” to our old report URL. That URL was retired during our documentation migration.
The same report, including its methodology and current tables, now lives at [canonical URL]. We have also redirected the old address there.
If you are updating the guide, would you consider changing the citation to the canonical URL so readers land directly on the report?
Thanks for citing the research.
Keep the request factual. Do not claim a broken link damages the publisher's rankings. Do not ask for keyword-rich anchor text. Do not offer money, products, services, or a reciprocal link in exchange for an undisclosed followed link.
One carefully reviewed follow-up is enough. Stop after a rejection, opt-out, or no response to the follow-up.
Track recovery without inventing impact
Use clear statuses:
- Candidate
- Verified lost
- Fixed on site
- Contacted
- Restored
- Redirected correctly
- Declined
- Permanently lost
- False alert
- Recheck later
For restored links, record the live referring URL, destination, anchor, link attribute, restoration date, and verification date. Recheck later because pages and links continue to change.
Measure:
- Verified losses reviewed
- Technical fixes completed
- Outreach requests sent
- Links restored
- Destinations corrected
- Referral visits from restored links
- Assisted conversions when your analytics supports that attribution
Do not claim that one recovered link caused a ranking or revenue change. Rankings and conversions have many inputs, and a backlink index's status is not itself a business outcome.
A monthly link reclamation routine
Week 1: Export and verify
- Export newly reported lost links.
- Deduplicate referring and destination pairs.
- Check live referring and destination URLs.
- Remove false alerts and temporary failures.
Week 2: Repair what you control
- Restore accidentally deleted pages.
- Add direct redirects to close replacements.
- Remove redirect chains.
- Update internal links and sitemap URLs.
- Retest final responses and canonicals.
Week 3: Review editorial cases
- Read the current referring context.
- Confirm your page remains the appropriate source.
- Find the responsible public contact.
- Send concise correction requests.
Week 4: Verify and learn
- Confirm accepted edits on the live page.
- Record declines and permanently lost links.
- Group losses by technical or publishing cause.
- Fix any reusable process that created the pattern.
Link reclamation checklist
Before closing a review cycle, confirm:
- Every candidate was checked on the live web.
- Referring and destination redirects were followed.
- Temporary failures were rechecked before outreach.
- Broken URLs you control were repaired first.
- Redirect targets preserve the old page's purpose.
- Unlinked mentions and broken-link prospecting were excluded.
- Outreach refers to a specific previous link or destination.
- The requested destination is current, canonical, and useful.
- No payment, forced exchange, or manipulative anchor was requested.
- Restored links were verified after the edit.
- Outcomes were recorded without unsupported ranking claims.
Link reclamation works best as maintenance. Recover the citations that remain useful, repair URL patterns that waste previously earned links, and accept genuine editorial removals. The goal is not to force an old backlink back into existence. It is to preserve accurate paths between a publisher's citation and the resource its readers expect.
